Michael,
A more recent version of pwdutils (for SLES9) than is available from the
standard SLES9 set of packages is available from the LON-CAPA install site:
(e.g.,
http://install.loncapa.org/suse/sles9/RPMS/i586/pwdutils-3.0.6-1.i586.rpm
for 32-bit). This newer version of pwdutils supports the use of the --stdin
option, required when LON_CAPA is used to create file system authenticated
users.
One of the recommended steps in the install process for LON-CAPA on SLES9 is
to use yast to carry out an update to pwdutils
(http://install.loncapa.org/sles9_install.html)
