To avoid some continuing frustration regarding the spreadsheet, I want to
point out that we are aware of the following problems regarding it:

* the calculation progress can be very slow
* the spreadsheet frequently unnecessarily re-calculates entries that did not
* the size of the downloadable files can be close to unmanageable (around 25

All of the above issues have had a lot of attention in the development group,
and you can follow progress on http://bugs.lon-capa.org/ under the following
Bug-IDs: 473, 510, 677, 678, 682, 699, 748, 753, 754, 817, 840, and 937.

At this point in time, it does not help solve the problems faster to file
additional bugs, stop us on the hallway, call us on the cellphone, etc. This
already is and has been at the top of our agenda

Given the amount of effort we have and will continue to pour into solving
this, we do have high hopes to have this fixed before the end of this year.

In the meantime, we are aware that you will need to get to your grades. Here
are some remedies:

* if all you need is to see which problems a student solved in what number of
tries, a count of number of problems solved per homework set, and the total
number of problems solved, the Chart functionality (CHRT) does a very good

* if you need all data from the spreadsheet, we can assist you by directly
accessing the machines - drop us an email when you need your data. We will
then make the data available for you in a format you can use.

* should we get this all fixed before the end of this semester, we will make
the new version of the spreadsheet available on a mirror machine of the
current server, and let you know how to get to it.

Thank you for your patience and collaboration,

- Gerd.
