[LON-CAPA-users] Image visibility for students

Stuart!

Thank you so much. I appreciate the time you took to investigate this. I deleted the images folder from the course sequence and the images now show for students. I really don't know why the images folder had been imported in the first place.

Many thanks,
Will

The presence of spaces in the directory name is unrelated. The use of
custom rights is also not the cause of the issue you encountered.

The issue here is that the images used in the questions in your "Ch 25
Quiz Organic" folder have also been have explicitly imported into a
folder: "images" which exists alongside the "Ch 25 Quiz Organic"
folder within the Ch 25 Organic Chemistry in your course, and the
contents of that folder are set to "Hidden".

As discussed previously, when you publish a problem which includes
images, LON-CAPA automatically adds the tags needed to permit
student access to the image file when viewing the problem in your
course. Similarly, when the student's session in the course in
initialized, access to any images embedded within a problem, to which
the student has access will be enabled. Because of this there is no
need to explicitly import the images into a course. (Of course you
may have done that for other reasons).

Anyway, it is the fact that you have the "Hidden" parameter set (via
the Course Editor) for the "images" folder which is causing students
to encounter "access denied" for these images. (Apparently, the
specific access control for the imported image file overrides any
access enabled on the basis of the fact that the image file is
embedded in a problem, to which the student does have access).

A solution to this problem is to select the Course Coordinator role in
the course using these problems. Then click on "Course Editor", and
navigate through the hierarchy of folders/subfolders:

Main Course Documents -> Ch 25 Organic Chemistry

to display the contents of "Ch 25 Organic Chemistry".

Uncheck the "Hidden" checkbox for the images file to allow students to
be able to view the images, when used in the problems. Unfortunately,
by doing this you will also allow access to all the images directly
for students (i.e., outside the context of a problem).

If you don't wish to do that, then you could remove the "images"
folder, or selectively remove those images which are used in the
problems. Students currently logged in will need to re-select their
student roles in your course, for their sessions to reflect this
change to the contents of the course.
