Slots were generated as something differnet mainly to address some
aspects that PARm could never address in it's current state.

One aspect is they do a good job of packging together a collection of
paramters into one thing that can get assigned to a variety of
different items.

Also they can be made (as you saw) into somethign students can self
select, and thus schedule themselves into.

So they have their own features.

You description of PARM as intuitive is... uncommon. :-)

I can think about some way of doing the checkin procedure without
slots. It could make some users in some situations happy but, I think
most users will end up wanting more aspects of the slots then...
