Jay,

In that case, even though it's *strongly discouraged* and not really 
supported, I think your best bet is going to be going into the library server 
directly via ssh, and dealing with the tarball at the command line.  Many of 
us here, including myself, could help you through this offline, as long as 
you have a shell account on the server.  Let me know if you want a hand.
