I think I understand, but I will still need to get some aspirin......

But, do you agree that this is different than the default behavior for other
parameters? For example, coding "maxtries" into the XML seems to display
'properly' no matter what my role (author, cc, etc.)

The important thing is that it works for students, and that it is almost
Friday.
