The current LON-CAPA 2.11.2 is supported on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (and earlier).
The next release: LON-CAPA 2.11.3 is supported on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (and earlier).

One of the changes is the use of systemd for starting LON-CAPA services in 18.04, instead of SysV (as used in Ubuntu 16.04 and earlier).

Yep, as you say that resolved the error with jpg printing.  Thanks!

The machine tells me that I can upgrade to ubuntu 18 if I want.  Since it's a production machine in the middle of the semester I haven't.  Should loncapa work fine under Ubuntu 18.04?
