Hi,

Yes, you need the LaTeX math delimiters, i.e., $ ... $, $$ ... $$, \[ ... \], \begin{equation} ... \end{equation},  \begin{eqnarray} ... \end{eqnarray}, or the asterisk-forms of the latter two.

The <m> just gets you into LaTeX mode, not yet LaTeX’s various math modes. You would also have problems with LON-CAPA’s internal PDF generation (“Print”) if the delimiters are missing.

Another option for something of this simplicity would be the algebra tag:

<algebra>y=x^2</algebra>

The algebra tag may simply do the same as <m>$  $</m> under the hood.
