<div>Yes, you need the LaTeX math delimiters, i.e., $ ... $, $$ ... $$, \[ ... \], \begin{equation} ... \end{equation}, \begin{eqnarray} ... \end{eqnarray}, or the asterisk-forms of the latter two.</div>

<div>The <m> just gets you into LaTeX mode, not yet LaTeX’s various math modes. You would also have problems with LON-CAPA’s internal PDF generation (“Print”) if the delimiters are missing.</div>
