Michael,
When you reported this issue on Monday I did a grep for instances of
\$\#\s*\{\s*\@ in the LON-CAPA 2.7.1 codebase and only found the one
instance in lonplot.pm, which is the one you had encountered.
LON-CAPA was installed on a development server here at MSU in June
running Fedora 9 (perl 5.10) on i686 architecture, but I'm not aware
of a Fedora 9 installation in use in production. LON-CAPA has
officially been supported on Fedora 9 on both 32 bit and 64 bit since
version 2.7 in August this year.
Changes between Fedora 8 and 9 include the shift from perl 5.8.8 to
5.10, which you have commented on, and also a change in TeX packaging
from tetex to TeXLive. When you run ./UPDATE to install or update
LON-CAPA, starting with LON-CAPA 2.7, a script is run for
installations running under Fedora 9 to check if picins.sty is absent,
and if it is retrieve it from CTAN install, and then run texinfo
rehash and fmtutil-sys --missing. This is necessary because
picins.sty is not included in TeXLive whereas it is in tetex. tetex is
no longer being maintained, hence the switch to TeXLive by the Fedora
distro.
