I also struggle with the cloning mechanism, which BTW does not allow  
intra-domain cloning.

Here's what I ended up doing: as Domain Coordinator, I became Course  
Coordinator of the to-be-cloned course, and in the Course Environment  
entered the owner of the new course. Then cloning worked.
