Hm, old server (SLES9): 5.11.0, new server (FC5): 5.12.0. LON-CAPA (or
the YaST/yum update?) initiated the installation of those maxima
versions. I can't see any issues at the moment but was wondering about
the different versions.

Ok, it's good that you confirmed that. This could be the reason why the
old development version of maxima (5.9.2) was kept running on our server
after installing the first offical LON-CAPA release with maxima, though
installing the new LON-CAPA version caused an automated installation of
maxima 5.11.0 on that server.

Besides the things you discussed with Peter (string library), I can't
see any reason at the moment. Thanks for the background information.
