# /sbin/shutdown -rF now

will run fsck on reboot while the machine is still in single user. If 
it finds anything wrong, it will ask you to login as root and drop you 
to a single-user command shell. You can then run fsck with advanced and 
repair options.

There is no filesystem check utility while the machine is running in 
normal multi user mode - that would be much too risky.

If fsck comes back fine, it's another problem - you don't loose 
anything by running fsck, you can just eliminate one possible source of 
problems.

But a non-running "vi" is an indicator of something very fishy on the 
box ...
