Construction Space

Construction Space

Now that we are done with an overview of the different problem types, we
can discuss creating content. Content creation is done in construction
space or private space. If you click the ROLES button on your
remote control, you will see that you have the role of author and/or co-author.
Authors and co-authors have permission to create resources in the LON-CAPA system.

All resource creation is done in your construction space. After clicking
ROLES on the remote control and becoming an author or co-author, you
have permission to access construction space by clicking the CSTR button
on the remote control.

In construction space, you will mainly be doing the five following actions:

Creating directories.

Uploading content pages (.html or .htm pages) and images into your
  construction space.

Creating problems.

Creating maps (sequences and pages).

Publishing resources.

When you access construction space, you will see a green frame at the top
of your browser window. You will use the functions in this frame upload files
from your machine and create directories. There are other functions in this
frame as well.

To create problems, you go to the location bar in your browser window and
enter in the URL of your future resource. For example, if I want to create a
problem called matching.problem in my subdirectory called demo, I type
http://tmp1.lite.msu.edu/priv/felicia/demo/matching.problem
in the location bar and hit enter. I will then be brought to the resource that
is on that page. Because this resource does not exist yet, LON-CAPA will
automatically bring up the problem editor.

The same technique above is used for created .page and .sequence files, but
instead of LON-CAPA automatically bringing up the problem editor, it will bring
up the RAT - Resource Assembly Tool.

Option Response problems

Option Response Problems

Option Response questions are similar to radio response questions,
but instead of selecting one foil by clicking it's corresponding button,
you select an option from the foil's drop-down box.

Option response questions are usually used as a collection of true and
false foils or as a matching question.

There are two ways to create your option response question. The first way
is called simple option response and the second way is option
response with concept groups. Simple option response is simply a collection
of foils with designated corresponding correct options. Option response with
concept groups allows more specification for testing the conceptual
knowledge of your students. You can group foils into different categories, or
concept groups and later analyze the data from your students submissions
to see if knowledge is lacking in a particular concept. For example, the statement
"a is less than b" and the statement "b is greater than a" represent the same
concept, but offer variety in the question such that students have to help each
other instead of merely share their common answers.

Click the right arrow to see examples of the two different option response
questions.

Resource Space and Publishing

Resource Space and Publishing

After you create your resource in construction space, you will need to
publish it before you can use it. Publishing places a copy of your resource from your construction (private) space into the public space. The public space is searchable and browsable. You can use the buttons SRC and RES on your remote control to search and browse the resource (public) space.

You can can publish a resource in two ways.
The first method is to click the Publish this Resource button in the
green frame in construction space after you are finished creating your resource.
This is a quick method to use after creating a problem or map (.page or .sequence).

The second method of publishing is to click the publish link next
to the resource in your directory list. For example, after you upload a new
file, you are brought back to your directory list. You can then publish your
newly uploaded file by finding the filename in the directory list and then clicking the publish link next to it.

After you select publish using one of the methods above, you will be required
to fill in metadata. Metadata specifies important information about
the resource, such as the author and copyright. You can also enter in notes,
an abstract, and keywords. Entering keywords into the meta data will
make you newly publish resource searchable.

If you want to change your resource or its associated metadata, simply
republish the resource. LON-CAPA saves all the old versions of your previous
publications. Therefore, if you make a change that you regret or simply prefer
the older version, just retrieve an old version. To retrieve an old version,
go to your construction space and find the resource. Click on the resource name. After that, click on the button Retrieve Old Version from the green frame on the top of your browser window.

Resource is the term used to describe the material that is

Content pages: This is the term used for pages that are purely for

Problems: These are questions given to the student in which all

Maps: Maps are ways of stringing your resources together. There
  are two kinds of maps:

Sequences: This is a type of map that in which you need to use
the arrow keys or NAV button to traverse through the different resources.
Sequences always end with the extension .sequence.

Pages: This is a type of map in which all of the resources

problems will appear to look like a homework set in the browser

String response problems are problems in which the student submits
a string of characters for their answer. Good examples of string response problems are vocabulary words and chemical formulas.

three types are as follows:
