Hi Peter,

There are three names associated with a machine:

- IP number
   - this is effectively not used by anything
   - if you change this the only effect you'll see is that while the
DNS changes propagates and possibly up to 24 hours afterwards other
machines in the network will refuse to talk to your machine
- DNS name
   - this is used by running processes on machine to know if a machine
     is connected to the network
   - if you change this we'll need to update the hosts.tab file that
is sent out in a release and other machines will refuse to talk
to your machine until they update to a release with the update
hosts.tab (or they manually integrate the changes into their
     hosts.tab)
- LONCAPA id
   - this is used by almost all things to talk about lon-capa
     information
   - if you change this all kinds of things will act oddly (most
important of which being you won't get notidfied of updates to
     resources you are subscribed too.)

So in order to have as a seemsless transition is possible don't change
any of these, just change what hardware answers to these names.
