is/past can be checked on the class enrollement screen
probably the best spot for this is
1) click on STAT
2) in the 'Analysis Reports' box select 'Class list'
3) with 'Student Status' set to 'Active' you can check if they currently
are in your course
4) with 'Student Status' set to 'Expired' you can check if they were
in your course and now aren't

Currently there isn't a way to ask that question of the system.
