Rex,

I have filed a LON-CAPA enhancement request to (optionally) provide customresponse with the "Math Previewer" functionality seen in formularesponse and mathresponse; see: bugs.loncapa.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6978

I included you as a Cc on bug 6978, and have implemented the required changes, and marked it as resolved. Although these changes will be included in the next LON-CAPA release (2.12), comment #2 included in the bug report describes how to patch 2.11.4 (released February 2022) to provide this functionality.

Unfortunately, the server for your domain is still running 2.11.3 so the instructions in comment #2 in the report are not currently applicable to your LON-CAPA instance.

Subject: [LON-CAPA-users] Response entry preview

For formula response questions, there seems to be some javascript
employed to show students a preview of what they've typed. This is
extremely useful in aiding the students to get whatever expression
typed correctly: if it renders in the preview as the answer was
intended, all is good. Helps catch mismatched parentheses and whatnot.

I have a large number of customresponse questions for my Calculus II
course, where I let Maxima and Perl do a lot of the heavy lifting to
evaluate the students' answers. Unfortunately, the previewer is not
enabled on customresponse problems. Is there a particular javascript
that I can enable/import into a question, perhaps in authoring space,
to get the previewer working?

Rex
