Some Universities Striking Independent Posture On Online Courses.

The Chronicle of Higher Education (6/21, Kolowich) reports that while
colleges in recent years have often turned to technology firms to facilitate
their online courses, "the provosts in a consortium of major research
universities are considering" building a non-private online course
infrastructure independent of such platforms as Coursera, the massively open
online course firm. The piece notes that the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation has released a white paper suggesting "that its members figure
out if they can work together on a common 'framework' for their online
offerings."

Excerpt: The consortium's provosts met on June 15 to discuss the task
force's report, said Ms. Robel. The meeting did not produce any concrete
plans, she said, but there was "interest in moving forward with
discussions."
