I just tried out MathJax, and you're right it will be able to do what I'm looking for. It also has \dfrac, which is awesome. When is the new version expected to be available?

I am afraid that's the way it is. In print it will be fine, but on the web, we'll have to work with the limited options we have. A new version of LON-CAPA supports MathJax, which might do the trick, but till then it's either small and inline or large and centered :-(
