[LON-CAPA-users] Lon Capa hitting itself?

We had a load spike at around 2:30 AST on Sunday.
When I look in the logs there are many hits like:

35.9.66.ZZZ - - [17/Apr/2011:14:25:25 -0300] "HEAD
/raw/uploaded/acadiau/3y4322177a8314dc6acadiaul8/default_1297969724.page
HTTP/1.1" 200 0 "-" "libwww-perl/5.805"

and also many hits like:

131.XXX.YYY.ZZZ - - [17/Apr/2011:14:25:26 -0300] "POST
/res/brookscole/serway/College_Physics_7ed/Chap09/prob0930.problem HTTP/1.1"
200 20284 "-" "libwww-perl/5.79"

where 131.XXX.YYY.ZZZ is the IP of our Lon-Capa server.  We are running
2.9.1-2010112008
The server has 1 GB of RAM and runs on Redhat 4. It has a dual core 2.1 Ghz
proc.

Are these hits normal?  Is there anything we can do to alleviate the load?
It has made the system unresponsive to students attempting to use the site.
