[LON-CAPA-users] determining if user entered a valid number

I can see that LONCAPA accepts 1.0e-3, or 1.0 x 10^-3 (with or
without spaces) as a correct answer for the number 0.001.  What 
kind(s) of programming does LONCAPA use to convert those strings 
to a number?  Does it use one or more Perl functions or some custom 
code?
