[LON-CAPA-users] Formula response syntax help

I know I must be doing something stupid here, but I'm stuck.

If I have an answer variable

$dFy="$b(y+dy)^$y1";

Things appear to work as expected.  But when I do

$dFy="$b(y+dy)^$y1-y";

I keep getting "Computer's answer is incorrect" when I go to view the  
problem in construction space.  Any ideas?    I'm running 2.4.1, but  
grabbed it yesterday before the official announcement came out.
