Hi,

every now and then I experience that latex commands do not come out as I 
expect (we use convert to images as a default here).

The latest issue is German Umlaute. For instance, ü (typeset in latex as 
\"u) comes out as
[\"?]u

Sometimes we can use the HTML typesetting ü as a workaround, but 
occasionally it is absolutely necessary to have the Umlaut within tex, as in
<m> f(x)=\left\{
\begin{array}{ll}
1 & \mbox{f\"ur} x>0\\
0 & \mbox{sonst}
\end{array}
\right.
</m>

Another issue I remember is that \mapsto (|->) comes out as \to (->).

Are there any tricks to make tex/loncapa behave correctly?
I have tested these issues using "standalone" latex on our server 
machine. There the dvi-output is as desired.
