I would go with the second, since in many cases in chemistry and 
physics numbered variables make more sense (e.g. R1, R2 for resistance 
of resistors in a loop).
I can see why 2X should be translated into 2*X, but I don't think that 
anyone who writes X2 means X*2. Can you just change this part of the 
implicit multiplication algorithm?
