Some more up to date instructions:
(you do not need to log in as root; mailman has some sudo capability)

1. Login (shell A): ssh mailman@zaphod.lite.msu.edu
2. Login (shell B): ssh mailman@zaphod.lite.msu.edu
2. (shell A) bin/newlist lon-capa-msu
3. [enter your e-mail]
4. (shell B) cp /etc/aliases aliases
5. (shell B) emacs -nw aliases (edit the file; insert what the
                      shell A is telling you)
6. (shell B) sudo /bin/cp /home/mailman/aliases /etc/aliases
7. (shell B) sudo newaliases
8. (shell A) [press enter]
9. Logout both shells
