\label{Parameter_grace}

A Grace Period Past-Due parameter can be set to allow students to submit answers to problems during a grace period after the due date and receive partial credit. The partial credit for each problem part is determined from the parameter value and the time elapsed since the due date for the latest submission for that part.

\begin{itemize}

\item Offset from duedate

Each Grace Period parameter value will include one or more offsets, each with its own partial credit value ($>$= 0 and $<$= 1). Offset values -- week(s), day(s), hour(s) and/or minute(s) -- are relative to the due date.

\item Partial Credit

Each partial credit value can be identified as "gradual", in which case the points reduction for lateness will follow a linear function; otherwise the reduction will be a step function.

\item Submission Record

The partial credit value, offset from the due date, and end date of the grace period (the "overdue date") are all stored in a student's submission record, when a submission is made between the due date and overdue date.

\item Points Value

Points values shown in the Assessment Chart and in the student's Grades overview automatically incorporate the points reduction for lateness if applicable, if the last submission for a problem part occurs after the due date and before the overdue date.

The points for a problem part submitted during the grace period is computed from: awarded * weight * partial credit for lateness. Accordingly, changes can be made to the weight at any time, as is the case for submissions before the due date.

\item Time Limit (interval) Parameter

A Grace Period parameter set for a resource or folder will not apply if a time limit (interval) parameter is also in effect.

\item Listing Students with late submissions

A ``Fractional credit for late submission'' link in the ``Content Grading'' menus for a particular problem can be used to view which students have taken advantage of the Grace period for the current problem. It can also be used to modify the reduction due to lateness \textit{after} submission for selected students, when the partial credit factor in the applicable grace parameter has been changed.

\item Due date change

If the due date is changed for a problem so it is no longer past due, then if students with existing partial credit for late submissions make new submissions which are graded (and charged a try), any partial credit fraction will no longer apply.

To avoid requiring new submissions by students, it is recommended to update the partial credit value to 1.0 in the grace period parameter, and then use the ``Fractional credit for late submission'' link in the Grading menu to remove any penalty for lateness for students with existing submissions. Once that is done the due date can be changed, and the grace period parameter deleted, or the partial credit value changed again to the desired value for submissions which may be made after the new date, if a grace period should still be offered.

\end{itemize}
