This error message has come up when a user tried to look at a resource
in the publication space, while the viewer is not currently in a
class.
LON-CAPA's resources are rendered very dynamically, reacting to the
class the viewer is in, where in a sequence they are, whether they've
finished other problems correctly, how many times they've tried a
problem... all of these things are stored as part of the information a
course keeps track of about a student. When viewing resources that
depend on this information to determine how to render them correctly
while not actually in a course, LON-CAPA cannot really determine how
to correctly render the resource.
Rather then simply refuse to show you the resource, LON-CAPA will try
to make reasonable guesses about how you want to view the resource. In
order to warn you that this is not a definitive rendering of the
resource, LON-CAPA displays the warning ``Could not handle ambiguous
resource reference'' to warn you that it's guessing about the
resource.
For the same reasons as LON-CAPA cannot ``correctly'' determine how to
render the resource, you will not be able to correctly interact with a
resource viewed with an ambiguous reference. LON-CAPA logs a student's
interaction with a resource in the course information, so if you are
not viewing the resource from inside a course, LON-CAPA has nowhere to
store information about whether or not you've gotten the problem
correct, how many tried you should be allowed, etc, so all input to
the problem will simply be discarded. To test the problem, use your
\textbf{Construction Space}.

be uploaded to your construction space, then published. Then, in the
text area of your problem, add the following:

where DOMAIN is the domain the picture is in, AUTHOR is the person who
published the picture, and the rest is the standard path to the picture.
It is also possible for advanced users to use a script variable in
the place of the picture URL, like this:
\texttt{<img src=''\$picture'' />}
and use the string variable \$picture in the script of the problem to
select from several possible pictures. If you do this, you will need
to \textbf{Edit XML} for the problem and add the various graphics
used in the problem to the <allow> tags on the bottom.

+++ loncom/html/adm/help/tex/Authoring_Dynamic_Plot.tex
\label{Authoring_Dynamic_Plot}
Dynamically generated plots are used to produce graphs which will be
different for each student who views them. The plots are produced by
calling 'gnuplot', and in fact the xml tag for the plots is <gnuplot>.
Dynamically generated plots should be used in conjunction with a perl
script block which generates the data to be plotted. If you are using
static data a dynamically generated plot is not appropriate because of
the overhead associated with generating the plot. In that case, use a
picture (see \ref{Authoring_Adding_Pictures}).
There are a great deal of parameters that can be set for a plot. These
parameters are accessed by including various sub-tags. By default only
the <gnuplot > tag and <curve > tag are present in a plot. The
sub-tags allow you to define the axes of the plot, the presence of a
key, the placement of gridlines, and the title and legends on the
plot. The example given below shows the use of the <axis > sub-tag to
set the domain and range shown in the graph.
Below is an example which produces a simple plot. To use it, create a
new problem and \textbf{Edit XML}. Remove all of the text and replace
it with the text below:
\begin{verbatim}
<problem >
<script type="loncapa/perl" >
$amplitude = &random(3,5,1);
for ($x=-6.0; $x<=6.0; $x+=0.05) {
push @X,$x;
push @Y, $amplitude * sin($x);
}
</script >
<gnuplot font="medium" width="400" grid="on"
height="300" border="on" fgcolor="x000000"
alttag="dynamically generated plot" align="center"
bgcolor="xffffff" transparent="off" >
<axis ymin="-6.0" ymax="6.0" xmin="-5.0"
xmax="5.0" color="x000000" />
<curve
linestyle="lines"
pointtype="1"
pointsize="1"
name=""
color="x000000" >
<data >@X</data >
<data >@Y</data >
</curve >
</gnuplot >
<startouttext /><br />
What is the amplitude of this function?
<endouttext />
<numericalresponse answer="$amplitude" >
<responseparam type="tolerance" default="5%" name="tol"
description="Numerical Tolerance" />
<responseparam name="sig" type="int_range,0-16" default="0,15"
description="Significant Figures" />
</numericalresponse >
</problem >
\end{verbatim}
Below is a screenshot (in construction space) of the resulting plot.
\includegraphic{dynamic_plot}
It's likely that the above plot doesn't quite look right. It would be
nice to have the gridlines drawn every 1 unit instead of every 2
units. A title, and labels on the axes, would be a nice
addition. Although it's overkill for this example, we can also add a
key for the plot. We can accomplish these changes by inserting
sub-tags into the <gnuplot > tag.
Gridlines can be set using the <xtics > and <ytics > tags. The names
of these tags correspond to the names of the commands used in
gnuplot. We specify the beginning, end, and increment of the tick
marks. Gnuplot only puts gridlines on the tick marks.
Inserting the <title >, <xlabel >, and <ylabel > commands allows us to
set the title and axes labels as one would expect. Inserting a <key >
tag, but not changing any of the information in it, signals gnuplot to
place a key in the graph. If we decide we don't want the key, deleting
the <key > tag will remove it from the graph.
These changes in the xml are shown below and a screenshot of the new
plot is provided as well.
\begin{verbatim}
<problem >
<script type="loncapa/perl" >
$amplitude = &random(3,5,1);
for ($x=-6.0; $x<=6.0; $x+=0.05) {

\label{Authoring_HTML_vs_Tex}
LON-CAPA renders resources in several formats, including on the web in
HTML and in LaTeX for renderings designed to be printed.
When creating problems, it is possible to use LaTeX directly by using
the <m> tag\index{m tag}\index{tag, <m>} (see
\ref{Authoring_M_Tag}). Anything between the <m> tag in a resource
will be interpreted as .tex.
However, this should be used as a last resort for when you wish to do
something that is impossible to do in HTML. LON-CAPA will convert to
and from LaTeX and HTML whenever necessary, and it is much easier (and
therefore more likely to work) to convert HTML to LaTeX then to go the
other direction, because HTML is so much simpler then LaTeX.
Thus, given the choice of
\texttt{H<sub>2</sub>O}
or
\texttt{<m >H\textbackslash{}subscript\{2\}O</m >}
it is better to use the HMTL version.
A necessarily-incomplete list of capabilities: LON-CAPA can convert
HTML tables in LaTeX tables, images into LaTeX images, LaTeX symbols
into HTML, and LaTeX math into HTML (though it does not usually look
as good as LaTeX).
If you really wish to have the web rendering and the LaTeX rendering
do something different, perhaps because the automatically generated
LaTeX->HTML conversion did not do what you wanted, you can surround
your LaTeX with <tex> </tex>\index{tex tag}\index{tag, <tex>} tags,
and your HTML version with <web> </web>\index{web tag}\index{tag,
<web>} tags. The stuff placed between the <tex> tags will only show on
the LaTeX rendering of the resource, and the stuff placed between the
<web> tags will only show on the HTML web rendering of the resource.

Wrapping TeX with <m > </m >\index{m tag}\index{tag, <m>} will put the
TeX through the TTH\index{TTH}(tex to html) converter when rendering a
resource to a web page.
If you want variables inside of this tag to be evaluated before the
tex gets converted, then use <m eval=''on'' >\index{eval=on}. For
example, <m eval=''on''>\textbackslash{}[\$eqn\textbackslash{}]</m >,
will evaluate the variable \$eqn first and then run it through the
TTH\index{TTH} converter.
For example, put the following in a script in the resource:
\texttt{\$eq = ``\$a+\$b''; \$eq =~ s/\textbackslash{}+-/-/g;}
and in a text area, you can type:
\texttt{<m eval=''on''>\$eq</m>}
You will get the equation rendered with no +-, no matter what value
\$b may take on.

Suppose you want to plot a piecewise function similar to the
following:
\begin{verbatim}
f(x) = a*x + b if (x < 4.5)
f(x) = a*x if (x >=4.5)
\end{verbatim}
The following is the XML representation of a problem with a dynamic
plot based on this. The work is done in a <script> block that
generates the data sets used in the plot.
\begin{verbatim}
<script type="loncapa/perl" >
$a = &random(2,5,1);
$b = &random(3,6,1);
for ($x = 0; $x<4.5; $x+= 0.05) {
push @X, $x;
push @Y, $a*$x + $b;
}
for ($x = 4.5; $x<=10; $x+= 0.05) {
push @X, $x;
push @Y, $a*$x;
}
</script >
<gnuplot font="medium" width="500" grid="on" height="400" border="on"
fgcolor="x000000" alttag="dynamically generated plot" align="center"
bgcolor="xffffff" transparent="off" >
<curve linestyle="lines" pointsize="1" pointtype="1" color="x000000"
name="">
<data >@X</data >
<data >@Y</data >
</curve >
</gnuplot >
\end{verbatim}
The above script works, but it produces a plot like this:
\includegraphics{dynamic_piecewise}
A better solution is to use two seperate <curve> statements to plot
two separate curves. So on the second piece of the function we use
@X2 and @Y2 instead of @X and @Y. Then in the <gnuplot> tag we
include a second <curve> sub-tag.
\begin{verbatim}
<script type="loncapa/perl" >
$a = &random(2,5,1);
$b = &random(3,6,1);
for ($x = 0; $x<4.5; $x+= 0.05) {
push @X, $x;
push @Y, $a*$x + $b;
}
for ($x = 4.5; $x<=10; $x+= 0.05) {
push @X2, $x;
push @Y2, $a*$x;
}
</script >
<gnuplot font="medium" width="500" grid="on" height="400" border="on"
fgcolor="x000000" alttag="dynamically generated plot" align="center"
bgcolor="xffffff" transparent="off" >
<curve linestyle="lines" pointsize="1" pointtype="1" color="x000000"
name="" >
<data >@X</data >
<data >@Y</data >
</curve >
<curve linestyle="lines" pointsize="1" pointtype="1" color="x000000"
name="" >
<data >@X2</data >
<data >@Y2</data >
</curve >
</gnuplot >
\end{verbatim}
\includegraphics{dynamic_piecewise2}
This is still not a desirable result. Typically one wants an open
circle or closed circle defining the domain of each
piece. Unfortunately there is no easy way to do this in gnuplot
currently. If this effect is desired, perhaps using a static image
and a randomlabel problem would be a better approach. A second
solution would be to add data which draws a circle to your curves.

username \texttt{physics123}, and make everyone who will be creating
resources for physics123 be co-authors to this virtual user. This
allows collaborators to work with each other.
To create a co-author, you must log into LON-CAPA as the author, pick

the username for the person you want to be a co-author, fill in the

A course can not be ``deleted'' from a LON-CAPA server. Courses occupy
very little storage space, and an inactive course is not a burden on
the system. On the other hand, allowing data to be permanently deleted
could lead to serious accidental data loss.
You \emph{can} expire the roles\index{roles, expiring}for all users in
the course. For example, when you use \textbf{ENRL} or \textbf{CUSR}
to put students, instructors, or course coordinators into a course,
you can set an ending date for those roles. When the ending
date\index{roles, end date} is reached, the role associated with the
course will not be accessible to the user any more.
If you view the \textbf{ROLES} screen, you will see a checkbox at the
top that allows you to display all roles. If you check that box and
click the display button, you can see your current and expired roles,
if any.
It is a good idea to get into the habit of setting end dates for all
courses.
