[LON-CAPA-admin] DNS/CNAME question

Hi,

Centos7 is reaching end of life and the IT group here at Ohio University is getting
ready to switch our VM’s over to RHEL8.

The question of cnames for the servers has come up again, and I just want to
double check.

They’d prefer to has a generic machine name (e.g., vm3491e4) and then a CNAME for the loncapa
server name (e.g., capa2.phy.ohio.edu) since they say it is quicker to roll over,
but they can set the machine name to capa2.phy.ohio.edu if the application needs it.
It will just take longer for the rollover.

I personally am not worried about the rollover time.

My questions:
* Is it possible to set the LONCAPA recognized ip name as a CNAME?

* Is it a problem? (I saw notes about WAF/Reverse Proxy in the 2.11.4 release notes,
not sure if they run this, not sure if it is worth the hassle)

The default for me is to tell them to keep the machine names exactly as currently defined,
but I figured I’d do due diligence.

Thanks,
Mark
