Nathan,

My understanding is that proper LaTex is
<m>$y=x^2$</m>

Another option for something of this simplicity would be the algebra tag:

<algebra>y=x^2</algebra>

The algebra tag may simply do the same as <m>$  $</m> under the hood.
I’m not sure.
