Stuart,

Thanks for the reply! We just started the first of our 2 summer sessions
here at Binghamton so I think I'll wait until this is over before we give it
a try.

Thanks,

Switching hostnames can be done, although there will be a 24 hour
period before the host tables in memory on LON-CAPA servers in the
cluster all reflect these "DNS" changes. During that time the SUNY
Binghamton servers will be unable to connect to other servers in the
cluster, because of a mismatch between lonHostID and hostname. If
Binghamton LON-CAPA users can live with this potential disruption then
this switch can be done.

LON-CAPA servers reload their hostname look-ups when loncron runs at
5.10 am local time. To minimize disruption the switchover at
Binghamton should be coordinated with the LON-CAPA Academic Consortium
so the hostname changes can be pushed out to the Consortium's "DNS"
servers at the same time as they are switched over locally.

This type of hostname switch has been completed successfully in the
past at other domains, e.g., see:

http://mail.lon-capa.org/pipermail/lon-capa-cvs/Week-of-Mon-20080721/017117.html

The LON-CAPA lonHostIDs should *not* be changed, i.e., binghamtonl1
should remain the library server, binghamtona2 remain an access server
etc.
