LON-CAPA is now supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and a link to
installation instructions has been added to the install site
(http://install.loncapa.org).
LON-CAPA installation on RHEL uses up2date rather than yum to install
the packages which LON-CAPA requires. This approach was taken to
conform to the mechanism most likely to be used by RHEL administrators
to keep their systems up to date. However, yum can be used, although
yum would need to be installed as it is not part of the RHEL
distribution (unlike Fedora), and a yum repository of RHEL packages
would need to be available. A subscription to Red Hat Network is
required to use up2date.
Currently RPMs for the 32-bit x86 architecture have been made available
for prerequisites for LON-CAPA that are unavailable from RHN. RPMs for
the 64-bit x86 architecture will be made available next week for both
RHEL and Fedora core 4. It is anticipated that instructions for
installation of LON-CAPA on SuSE 9.2 (and 9.3) will also be available on
the install site towards the end of next week.
