[LON-CAPA-admin] Proper back-up procedure

We have set up a nightly network back-up procedure of lon-capa. Basically all
we do is to tar up the lonUsers- and res/tmcc directories. My question is
this:

Is this a safe procedure? What happens if someone is accessing/editing
records while the tar job is processing? Strictly speaking, doesn't
the mysql database have to be locked during a back-up?
