I have not been able to replicate Lars' situation on a RedHat 6.* or Redhat 7.*
machine. (I run the commands with Matthew's systemperl rpm, and his
rpm works perfectly.)

Some ideas (to do at your own risk):
1) Possible commands to consider:
 rpm -e --nodeps LON-CAPA-systemperl-3.4.1
 rpm -e --nodeps LON-CAPA-systemperl
 rpm -Uvh --force LON-CAPA-systemper-3.5-1.i386.rpm

2) Corrupt RPM database?
Perhaps your RPM database is really messed up.
Simplest solution is to back up your data and
reinstall with a new RedHat 7.*.

3) More information--
Read Edward Bailey's "Maximum RPM" http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/.
And try to hunt it down on your own.

Something strange happened on your system.

Regards,
Scott
