Are there any components of lon-capa that uses samba? I was wondering
whether I samba it on my system.

Dear Dr. Jensen:

The original idea was that instructors can "Network Neighborhood" to
their construction space.

If there are no instructors who want to use Windows' Network Neighborhood
with LON-CAPA, then it is certainly okay to remove samba from your system.

Regards,
Scott

No. Some people use samba to access their construction space to allow PC
tools (e.g. front page, dreamweaver etc.) to create resources, however this
is not an 'official' option, and samba is not part of LonCAPA.

When I do a check-rpms -v I'm told that I need the new version of
ghostscript (v. 6.51). However when as root I do

check-rpms -v --update -noftp

I get an error that

[root@schubert rpms]# check-rpms -v --update --noftp
updates for i686 processor, RH 6.2
Getting list of installed packages
Getting package lists from /var/tmp/rpms ...

RPM files to be updated:

ghostscript-6.51-16.1.6x.1.i386.rpm
Running rpm -Fvh ...
error: failed dependencies:
VFlib2 is needed by ghostscript-6.51-16.1.6x.1
xtt-fonts is needed by ghostscript-6.51-16.1.6x.1
libVFlib2.so.24 is needed by
ghostscript-6.51-16.1.6x.1

The needed packages above are not to be found at
install.lon-capa.org/3.1/latestRPMS nor any of the RedHat rpm mirrors
I checked.

How do I do this update? (Debian updates works better ;-) )

Thanks,
Lars.

Could you check the err.log file for any error messages related to
these images and send them to me?

You might need to run ldconfig as root.

Not for LON-CAPA. Not if you have a good version of libgd installed.

Martin,

I'm confused about your link: Under "Solution" you say "...upgrade to
version 6.53", but the example you give uses v. 6.51. Which one do you
mean I should upgrade to?

Thanks,
Lars.

It says "upgrade to version 6.53 (or patched version for your distribution)"
RedHat patched the 6.51 version for RH 6.2 against the vulnerability.
Thus, just execute the command given in the advisory.
And: yes, all those rpms are available on RedHat mirror sites in the updates
directories, e.g., on mirror.arc.nasa.goc or ftp.crc.ca.

Martin

Hi Lars,

> When updating with loncapa.tar.gz, how do we distinguish between a
> STABLE update and the latest development update?

From where you downloaded the loncapa.tar.gz file from.

The 'current' release is always the latest STABLE.

If you grab the file from

http://install.lon-capa.org/versions/unstable_latest/

Then you have something that is ranging on being the latest unstable
version.

(In the future please direct questions such as these to the
lon-capa-admin list)

Hi Guy,

Does this mean that it is better to do a cvs update instead of using
http://install.lon-capa.org/versions/unstable_latest/loncapa.tar.gz, when
installing the latest unstable version?

Lars.

Dear Dr. Jensen:

It is better to do a cvs update.

In the future,
http://install.lon-capa.org/versions/unstable_latest/loncapa.tar.gz
will be automatically updated on a periodic basis.

But until then, the absolute latest distribution would come
from a cvs update.

Regards,
Scott

Greetings,

Hopefully this isn't a blindingly obvious question, but how does one check
what version of LON-CAPA they're currently running? I upgraded, which went
fine, though now I'd like to see a "version x.x" somewhere.

Thanks,
Amber Fechko

As of right now we aren;t really branding versions expliclty anywhere.

The best I can offer is
http://your.server/cgi-bin/lonversions.pl

Which show the CVS version line for all LON-capa files.

In the future I expect the about.html page to contain this info.

Does the latest unstable contain the "Group copy" feature in the RAT?
And does it have date/time info on the remote? We just did a cvs update
to the latest unstable, but still don't see these features.

Amber,

The stable releases currently do not have a version number attached to them,
but all of the handlers do.

At the URL

http://(yourserver)/cgi-bin/lonversions.pl

you can see the version of every installed handler. If you have a CVS
checkout, you can see which version of each handler is the most recent one,
and which one is currently marked "stable".

If you let me know what machine this is, I can have a quick look.

Greetings.

Well, there's nothing like two conferences to help flush out the bugs in the
system. For those who have done the new LON-CAPA installation, a needed
perl module was not included. To get the module and install it on your
system, log in as root and execute the following commands:

wget \
http://install.loncapa.org/versions/rh73install/\
perl-suidperl-5.6.1-34.99.6.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh perl-suidperl-5.6.1-34.99.6.i386.rpm

The bug caused 'filesystem' authenticed accounts to not actually be
generated. A further bug kept us from detecting this immediately :(
If you have created any filesystem authenticated accounts since
installing on Red Hat 7.3, they must be fixed. Please email me directly
for information on this.

Anyone who did a Red Hat 7.3 install after June 7th does not have this
problem.

Matthew

Dear All:

There are 2 different UPDATING issues here to be aware of:

* Updating with the intelligent tarball (loncapa.tar.gz; recommended)
  versus
* Updating with CVS

*** Updating with the intelligent tarball ("loncapa.tar.gz" recommended)
STABLE tarball:
http://install.lon-capa.org/versions/current/loncapa.tar.gz
BLEEDING EDGE tarball (updated daily):
http://install.lon-capa.org/versions/unstable_latest/loncapa.tar.gz

*** Updating with CVS
STABLE CVS:
cvs update -r STABLE -d
BLEEDING EDGE CVS:
cvs update -A -d

Unless you are writing software code, I recommend using
http://install.lon-capa.org/versions/unstable_latest/loncapa.tar.gz
for development machines.

Regards,
Scott

tmcc. Its DNS to the outside world has been mapped to 134.197.153.209 by
the firewall. (The inside IP is still 134.197.122.5) Not surprisingly
I see nothing in my resource space anymore. Is there any way of fixing
this? Also, what ports must be opened at schubert?

Lars.

This only controls when we output MathML versus HTML from tth.

And the IE definition didn't change.

Hi Guy,

Thanks for this info. I also need to know if I need to re-run
loncapaconfig and change the IP address to the "outside address". To
outside users schubert has now been mapped to the address 134.197.153.209.
The "true" IP if schubert is still 134.197.122.5. This is also the IP
for "inside users". Before the firewall all users used the latter address.

Questions:

 * Do others on the loncapa network need to change the schubert
IP in their hosts.tab to be 134.197.153.201 ?

 * What address should I use in loncapaconfigure?

Thanks,
Lars.

Hi Guy,

What are the default ports numbers for smbd, nmbd, nfs, etc.?
-And where can I look this up (on both Debian woody systems and Redhat)?
(I didn't find these in /etc/services.)

Thanks,
Lars.

Yes outside users will need to change their hosts.tab to point to the
new external IP address.

> * What address should I use in loncapaconfigure?

You should continue to use your internal IP address.

What is the best way of going about this? Would you be able to change
the entry in the hosts.tab today on one of msu's development machines so
that I can test the resource space on schubert?

and no longer works with the existing LON-CAPA software.

If you run a production server, please edit the tmcc1 entry of your
/home/httpd/lonTabs/hosts.tab and change the IP address of this
entry from 134.197.122.5 to

	134.197.153.209

so the entry reads:

tmcc1:tmcc:library:schubert.tmcc.edu:134.197.153.209

Please let me know when you have made the change and resstarted the
necessary services so I can test the connection.

Thanks,
Lars.

Hi Guy,
Well, below is what the student E-mailed me. I don't have IE4
either so haven't yet been able to check this out myself.

Thanks,
Ray

"I can't log into LON-CAPA from my machine at home anymore. It worked for
the first assignment and then quit. When I click on the lon capa link from
mysfu, the remote comes up and I get a blank page and the remote fails to
full materialize. I noticed today that IE4 tells me there is an error on
the page. I checked my IE and I think my cookies and Java script are turned
on. Thanks in advance."

He subsequently responded with this further info:

tmcc1 can now see ohiou in the resource space. It can also see the
entire directory structure at ohiou, as well as all the names of all the
resources. However, when I try to access one I get the 503 message:

Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to
maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

This happens for all resources.

Mark tells me that the server is available, and not subject to
maintenance.

Could this be caused by our firewall? What's the fix?

Could someone else put change tmcc1's IP in their hosts.tab so I can
test other sites? The new IP for tmcc1 is 134.197.153.209

Please for now advise the student to use an up-to-date version of the browsers,
either IE 5.x or 6.x, all Netscapes version 4 and up, and most recent Mozilla
releases.

This 503 comes because the remote httpd daemon is refusing yourserver
access to any /raw/ URLs

Most likely the remote server needs to restart their webserver to
pickup the hosts.tab change.

Let me know if this doesn't work.

Guy,

This error persists even after both Ron and I have restarted httpd and
loncontrol - I cannot browse any resources on other machines, even
within my own domain. I have included below the end of tmcc1's
(schubert's) error_log. The last couple of requests to schubert, the
ones labeled "Spoof request," were made by me from our development
server. I assume this is caused by the newly erected firewall at TMCC!?
Any ideas how to fix this?

(The development server at tmcc has the same problems with accessing
resources from other servers.)

Thanks,
Lars.

Greetings.

We have found an error in the Red Hat 7.3 installation.

This bug affects *all* installations of LON-CAPA on Red Hat 7.3.

The Mysql table which holds the metadata for published items was not created.
A script is attached which addresses this problem. You will need to run this
script on your RedHat 7.3 server as root. If you are unable to execute the
script due to a "permission denied" error, be sure to make it executable by root:

chmod u+x ./fixsqldatabase.pl

Email me directly if there are any problems.

There are no security issues associated with this bug and your metadata table
is rebuilt every week, so no data will be permenently lost. However, until
this is fixed and the automatic rebuild occurs, searching for resources will
not return any results on the affected servers.

Matthew

We recently added a second loncapa server at tmcc (bifrost.tmcc.edu), and
after we added it to the hosts.tab of schubert as well as added schubert
to its hosts.tab and restarted services, the following happens:

 * When I now login to schubert it says on the Roles screen that
   "Your home server is bifrost.tmcc.edu"

 * The RES and CSTR buttons have disappeared from the remote

 * The author button has disappeared from the Roles screen

Why does this happen - is it a bug?

 Lars.

The second two points are a result of the first point.

I.E. the CSTR button and the selection of the author role can only
occur when one is logged into their homeserver.

When creating this second server did you create a jensen user on
bifrost?

If you that is bad and is why the above occurs.

A specific user name must only appear on 1 (one) library server in a
specfic domain.

Hi there,

as you may know there is a security hole in the apache web server that
leads to a DoS attack on Unix 32 bit systems (including Linux) and
to a remote exploit on Windows and Unix 64 bit systems.

I just tried to upgrade to the patched version released for RH 6.2.
This results in the following error messages:

# rpm -Fvh --test apache-1.3.22-5.6.i386.rpm apache-devel-1.3.22-5.6.i386.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
file /etc/httpd/conf/access.conf from install of apache-1.3.22-5.6 conflicts with file from package LON-CAPA-base-3.1-1
file /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf from install of apache-1.3.22-5.6 conflicts with file from package LON-CAPA-base-3.1-1
file /etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf from install of apache-1.3.22-5.6 conflicts with file from package LON-CAPA-base-3.1-1
file /home/httpd/html/index.html from install of apache-1.3.22-5.6 conflicts with file from package LON-CAPA-base-3.1-1

My guess is (since this are all configuration files) that I should just go
ahead with the upgrade because the rpm upgrade shouldn't touch configuration
files anyway. It is probably a good idea to make a backup copy of those files.
Any ideas what may go wrong, if I just go ahead?

Thanks,
Martin

The only that mmight go wrong is that the Includes of the
loncapa_apache.conf and the loncapa.conf files might disappaer

(The last STABLE put all of the the loncapa Apache configiguration in
those two files.)

To restore the configs, you can either run the UPDATE script that is
in the tarball. Or do a make install.

Thanks Guy.

FYI:

I just did a

# rpm -Uvh --force apache-1.3.22-5.6.i386.rpm apache-devel-1.3.22-5.6.i386.rpm

on dalton.chem.sfu.ca. As expected this did not overwrite
/etc/httpd/conf/access.conf, /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf,
/etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf or /home/httpd/html/index.html.

I then restarted apache ("/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart") and everything
appears to be fine.

Cheers,
Martin
